Digital Choke Daynotes |
What's a Daynote?"Daynotes" are daily (usually) journal entries of interesting happening and discussions. They are not 'blogs', which are often just a collection of links to other information (although we do include links occasionally). Daynotes are much more interesting (we hope). These "Digital Choke Daynotes" were inspired by the collection of daily journals of the "Daynotes Gang" (see sites at .com, .net), a collection of daily technical and personal observations from the famous and others. That group started on September 29, 1999, and has grown to an interesting collection of individuals. Readers are invited and encouraged to visit those sites for other interesting daily journals. If you have comments, send us an email. A bit more about me is here. You might also enjoy our little story about the death of the 'net. |

The eagerly awaited results of the 2005 Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest, named after the author of the phrase "It was a dark and stormy night...", as immortalized by Snoopy in the "Peanuts" comic strip.
According to the site, Mr. Bulwer-Lytton also originated the expressions "the pen is mightier than the sword", "great unwashed", and "the almighty dollar".
The winner is one Dan McKay, from Fargo ND ... who is a 'quantitative analyst for Microsoft Great Plains'. There is no indication that he is in charge of the Microsoft Help text ... or that he is the editorial consultant here.
I worked on a few problems and updates with the web filtering software today. We're adding a second 'collector' (web browsing 'catcher') on a differnet server. The intent is to have that one be the primary, and the existing server will just run the SQL database, along with being the backup. It's mostly done; just need to get the switch to 'span' properly. It may be that the switch is maxed out on spanning; we've got a ticket open on that issue.
I've also been working with my new laptop, a Thinkpad T42. It has the IBM logo on it, but it now belongs to Lenovo. A nice little system, with a fingerprint reader on it. I set it up to use that as the login, which works well. And I 'enrolled' four fingers, just in case I get an 'owie' on one. It was suggested that I enroll a toe, rather than finger, as that would be more secure. But I thought that the risk of an air quality alert would rule that out. More software installing tomorrow is on tap.
And, welcome to August. Sharp-eyed readers noticed that yesterdays' post was still in July. So I changed Monday's heading to correct that problem.
Still hot around here, close to 100 degrees (F). We had a good streak of 100+ last month, and the weather dweebs are guessing that the rest of this week will be over 100. Today we only got to 98-99, a welcome respite. But the humidity is under 30%, and it does cool down at night into the mid-upper 60's. The back patio, which gets full afternoon sun, is still a bit warm to walk on in the evening. Which probably explains why the flowers that Pam and Stacy planted in June are now brown. Not for a lack of water, or mulching. Just too much heat.
You probably saw all the articles about fake ATM cards. Make sure your bank covers fraud on ATM cards -- not all of them do. And watch your account activity for fraud. Around here, we (Pam, actually) check that daily.
A new report for you -- about some evil phishing. You might find it interesting.
Other than that, the "same-old, same-old".
... more later ...
