Digital Choke Daynotes |
What's a Daynote?"Daynotes" are daily (usually) journal entries of interesting happening and discussions. They are not 'blogs', which are often just a collection of links to other information (although we do include links occasionally). Daynotes are much more interesting (we hope). These "Digital Choke Daynotes" were inspired by the collection of daily journals of the "Daynotes Gang" (see sites at .com, .net), a collection of daily technical and personal observations from the famous and others. That group started on September 29, 1999, and has grown to an interesting collection of individuals. Readers are invited and encouraged to visit those sites for other interesting daily journals. If you have comments, send us an email. A bit more about me is here. You might also enjoy our little story about the death of the 'net. |

I notice that Dan Seto was commenting (complaining?) about the weather at his place. He notes that
Talk about the weather outside being frightful. The weather over the weekend was, as they say, unsettled. Yesterday morning dawned bright and clear. But by noon, the sky was filled with black clouds bringing sheets of rain, lightening, and thunder. There was even a report of a funnel cloud. No report yet of locust plagues but who knows?
You should know that Dan lives in Hawai'i. If you look at the 10 day weather forecast for Honolulu , you'll won't find much variation. Highs around 80 (F), lows around 70, partly sunny or sunny. It would seem that being a weatherperson there would be less than challenging.
Contrast that to today's weather in Rexburg (ID), where my daughter Stacy is going to college. Tomorrow's forecast is sunny, with a high of 6 and a low of -8. Should be about 1 degree around noon. Just a slight wind.
It's warmer at John Dominik's place in the "Twin Cities" (Minnesota) -- high is 35, low is 1. And at my house (Sacramento, CA), also cold (but not as cold): high 56, low 34.
Hey, Dan -- send me some warmer weather!
Here's a series of "before and after" pictures of the destruction of Katrina:
http://risingfromruin.msnbc.com/2005/12/that_was_then_t.html.
They are quite impressive in showing the powerful destruction of that storm. The residents there have a new term for the destruction: being "slabbed". In many cases, all that is left is a slab of concrete.
Relating to yesterday's "weather report": Dan Seto reports that
The weather here on (above?) O'ahu is nice today but the cold front that came through here is now over the Big Island and has triggered a flood watch there.
Oh well, all I can say is bundle up and stay warm while, this weekend, I think I'll go to the beach...
Life is tough out there. (But Pam and I had a great time visiting Maui. Very relaxing.)
Dan does have an excellent (as usual) small tribute to the events of this day in 1941, along with another haunting picture.
Some new research into the latest variant of the "Sober" worm indicates that
it is preparing for an attack on Jan 5, 2006. Readers will find info about
this analysis at their favorite news site.
There is a big increase in the volume of Sober-infected email. At the office
here, we're getting about 1-3 per minute. Of course, our email filtering is blocking
it by three techniques: keeping our anti-virus program current (for known malware),
and blocking all email executable attachments (for '0-day' attacks), and current
anti-virus on our computers and servers. So I am not worried about that impending
attack (but am ever-vigilant).
Readers planning on new "Christmas Computers" may want to ensure that their new
computer is properly protected. New computers from the big vendors already have
Windows XP with SP2 installed, which will help a bit. But all might benefit from
my "Simple Steps for Safe Computing" report here: http://digitalchoke.com
I tell you three times......
And there are rumors of an uninstall for the Sony 'rootkit'. No details on how effective (or complete), yet.
... more later ...
