I woke up about 9 am. I don't need much sleep, 5-6 hours on average. Which is a good thing, because when you work on computers, you tend to keep long and odd hours. I jumped out of bed. Well, I didn't really jump out. But I did get out of bed. And I made the bed (not perfectly, but neat enough). Into the bathroom for a shower, shaved, and got dressed in my favorite jeans and T-shirt. No shoes or socks, because I'd rather walk around barefoot, at least around the house. Except during winter, when I put on some white socks.
As I walked down the hall towards the front of the house, I passed by the computer room door. It was shut, of course. Again, I resisted the effort to open the door just to check on things, just into the kitchen for a small glass of orange juice. I took my OJ with me as I went to the front door, disabled the alarm system, and shuffled outside to get the morning paper. It was another nice bright sunny day, the paper said highs in the 80's, no rain forecast. I went back into the house and headed to the kitchen for breakfast.
My breakfast is usually quite simple -- just some cereal (Raisin Bran today), cold milk, just a bit of sugar, and some toast (sometimes cinnamon-raisin, sometimes Thomas' English Muffins) and orange juice. ("Part of a complete breakfast!"). I laid out the paper, and went from front to back while eating breakfast. Nothing very interesting, skipped the sports section (as usual; I'm not much of a sports fan) but the comics were pretty good. It was a simple way to start the day, but it was relaxing.
By the time I was done, it was almost 10 am. I cleaned up after myself: Dishes rinsed and in the dishwasher (not full enough to start it yet), cereal in the cupboard, milk in the refrigerator, newspaper in the recycle box. Back to the bathroom to brush my teeth, a short visit to the 'library' (I'm a pretty regular guy), and I was set for the day.
I went back down the hall, and opened up the computer room door. Everything was just as I left it. The test computer system was merrily humming along, processing the same data over and over though the router emulator. I stopped the program, and saw that the error log was empty. I took at look at the time data. Looked pretty normal. I saved the data into a spreadsheet, and made a quick graph. No matter what the size of the data, the data transfers happened pretty consistently. I saved the spreadsheet and graph into a separate folder on the hard drive.
It was time to test those weird data packets that I had gathered up. These were the data packets that somehow had some sort of time delay in them. The time delay didn't seem to be consistent, but it seemed like it was outside the norm. My router emulator program would check it out.
From the overnight data, I determined that a 50MB file size would work for data analysis. I gathered the suspect data packets into a 50MB file, and then set up the emulator program to work on that data file for about 1000 loops. I did a few calculations, and determined that it would take just over an hour to properly run through the data enough times to give me good results. It was time to mow the lawn, and that would only take about an hour - I didn't have that much lawn to mow, but I liked to keep it neat. So I started the program, watched it for a minute to make sure it was running OK, then I left the computer room.
